This group of young men made up the basketball team for the main college in Texas; Texas Western. They were a group of twelve individuals, seven of which were of African-American decent (1).  Five of those seven African-American men made up the team's starting line-up. The Miners became the first ever NCAA basketball team to have an all black starting line-up (1).  This famous line-up consisted of Orsten Artis and Bobby Hoe Hill as the point guards, Harry Flournoy and Nevil Shed as the forwards and David Lattin as the center (2).  Their head coach, Don Haskins, elected these five as he claimed they were his best five players that season and for no other reason. (3).
